Fun Day Out: Trash to Treasure! - May 10
Fun Day Out-Trash to Treasure! with Pam Wilcox
Saturday, May 10 1:30-5pm This class is full, but you can email Liz B at glassacademy@stainedglassexpress.com with "Trash to Treasure Notification" in the subject and we'll notify you if there is a cancellation and when we schedule another session!
Have you been tempted to pull over to the side of the road on trash day to pick up a beautiful (dirty!) wooden window, but you resisted because you wouldn't know what to do with it?
Get ready to pull over! Learn how to give new life to old windows by replacing the glass panes with beautiful stained glass. Instructor Pam Wilcox will teach you:
-How to identify a "good" window
-How to safely remove old glass and prepare the window frame
-How to measure the frame for glass panes
-How to install new glass into the frame
No Experience Necessary (If you've never cut glass before, come half an hour early for a quick tutorial!)
Price includes:
Instruction and support through completion during class, enough putty to complete your installation.
Buy from us:
The window! First-come-first-serve on class day to choose from these lovely old 6-pane windows that came out of the China Village Grange Hall. Reg. $12.50, your price will be $10+tax
-Points-We'll have them ready to go at the counter. A box of 50 is more than enough for this project (you could probably share a box between yourself and a friend!) Reg. $6.80, your price $5.44+tax
-Glass! After taking measurements for your window panes, take a break and pop into the store to shop for glass with a 20% discount. (You'll need 6 pieces of glass at least 7"x9"--you could spend anywhere from $20 to $100!) Mirror is a great inexpensive option to start out with. Or feel free to bring your own sheets of glass with you, keeping in mind each window has slightly different measurements.
Bring with you:
-Needle nose pliers (not the little jewelry kind), a metal putty knife, gloves and a dust mask, especially if you are sensitive to floating bits (you'll work outside for a short part of the class to increase ventilation, and Pam will discuss the potential of lead paint and how to mitigate exposure). We may have a few tools for you to borrow during class, but if you bring your own you won't have to share.
If you are a stained glass, fused glass, or mosaic artist, stick around! At the very end of class Pam will offer suggestions for installing stained/fused glass panels into window frames and preparing the glass for mosaic/grout. NOTE: This is a down and dirty class to learn to turn something old into something new. Perfection is not a goal; you will be able to take the skills you learn and improve your technique with time and practice!
