Classes and Friends Night Out at Stained Glass Express

SIMAX

For a few years now, Stained Glass Express has been offering 33 coe glass.  We are still learning and still adding product.  One of the growing stock is our 33 coe tubes and rods.  We stock Simax tubes and rods made by Schott.  This is a high- quality borosilicate glass.  The main ingredients are silica and boron.  Boro has a high heat resistance and a low thermal expansion.  (thus the low coe number).

Simax works best in high heat and is commonly used in lab equipment, industrial equipment and cookware.  However, in our art world it is a favorite because it creates smoot, transparent and strong beautiful pieces.

For Simax to work at it’s full potential it must be annealed properly.  Annealing is the process of eliminating internal thermal stress.  This stress comes from one area of the glass getting hotter than a neighboring area and will later develop cracks.  Usually it is annealed at 1050 F for about one hour and then cooled slowly.  If you cool too quickly it will crack.  Of course, this can vary depending on the thickness of the glass and other variables.

You can use Simax glass with other 33 coe glass like Glass Alchemy, Golden Gate, imported, Momkas, Northstar, Tautman and others.

We have not put simax on our website but if you talk to us and allow us to cut it to fit a box (or are willing to pay for oversized we will ship it.  Our colored rods are on the site.   https://www.stainedglassexpress.com/flameworking_glassblowing/33-coe/

In the art world the top item made is tobacco pipes, but also ornaments, pendants and other wonderful works of art!

STAINED GLASS DRAGONFLIES—THE MAGIC!

STAINED GLASS DRAGONFLIES—THE MAGIC!

These two pictures come from Julia’s Auction newsletter. (www.jamesdjulia.com) The one on the left is the 26” dragonfly chandelier by the Tiffany Studios and the one on the right is the 22” hanging head (or drop-head) dragonfly from the Tiffany Studios.

In the Chinese culture the dragonfly represents harmony, prosperity and good luck.  To Native Americans, they are a symbol of purity.  In Japanese culture, the dragonfly is a reminder of summer and early autumn and a symbol of strength and agility.  The Samurai believed the dragonfly represented marital agility and victory.  (adapted from Mike Fredericks newsletter on Julia’s site).  Swedish folklore suggest that dragonflies come around to check for bad souls, sneak up on children who tell lies and adults who curse to stitch up their eyes, mouths and ears!  The Welsh call them the snakes’ servant and believe they follow snakes and stitch up their wounds.

Interesting things about dragonflies is they can fly an amazing 45 miles an hour and can move in all six directions.  They can hover, fly backwards, straight up, down and either side.  They do this while moving their wings 30 times a minute.  To give perspective, a mosquitoes or housefly flap their wings 600 and 1000 times a minute.

Part of the dragonfly’s beauty is the iridescence both on its wings and on its body.  Stained Glass artist and crafters do great work with these traits.

Dragonflies are associated with

Change and transformation

Adaptability

Joy, lightness of being

With that in mind, Stained Glass Express offers a class called The Healing Dragonfly.  It is an uplifting class where you make a stained-glass dragonfly.

The next scheduled Healing Dragonfly starts Wednesdays July 12th – August 2nd (4 weeks) at $75, which includes all materials! Give us a call at 207-213-4126 or stop in our store to sign up!
